CHICAGO—The historic, revival-style building once known as the bustling headquarters of the iconic Chicago and North Western Railway is soon to become one of the larger-scale hotel developments of late with the creation of the dual-branded Canopy by Hilton Chicago Central Loop (Canopy Chicago) and Hilton Garden Inn Chicago Central Loop (HGI Central Loop). The stunning new property is expected to open in late summer. The 117-year-old building, located at 226 W. Jackson, will feature 350 guestrooms and suites between both properties, along with a food and beverage outlets for each – Depot 226 and Garden Central, respectively — both featuring locally-inspired dishes and craft cocktails. In addition, guests of either property will find an on-site fitness center, two unique event spaces, outdoor terrace space shared between both. Developed by Chicago-based Phoenix Development Partners and operated by Aimbridge Hospitality, the project serves as a much-welcomed beacon of hope for the Chicago travel industry.
“As our city reopens, our goal has been to bring a fresh, exciting hospitality option to Chicago to welcome avid travelers and locals alike to relax and recharge. Combining the energy and sophistication of the Canopy by Hilton lifestyle hotel with the experience of Hilton Garden Inn that is simply on another level, this development allows us to unite two unique brands in a very special way.” said John Mangel, CEO at Phoenix Development Partners. “Each hotel maintains its own distinct identity and offers unique amenities to serve guests and their varying needs at these top tier destinations.”
Appointed Landmark status by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, the property will pay homage to the site’s rich history through its stylish design, incorporating subtle nuances that reflect and celebrate its past. Guests will be greeted by an impressive grand entrance, while interior designs by Anderson/Miller, Ltd. will highlight the golden age of train travel. Some unique elements of the building will remain, including the original staircase and tile remnants that will be incorporated into the lobby space. Various mixed media works, historical pieces and architectural fragments will also be featured on property that will celebrate travel, cartography and Chicago’s rich history.
